Land Administration - Photogrammetry Case Study

LiDAR Flood Mapping Project

Identify Hydro features and clean the surface using Raw Bin Macro filtered LiDAR points

Background and Objectives
Our client is a leading supplier of GIS and Photogrammetry mapping. They provide services to government agencies and private sector.  They have worked extensively on projects in Water and Wastewater, Urban Planning, Utilities, Land information systems and Transportation sectors.

Key Aspects of the Project
The key objective of this project was to Identify Hydro features and clean the surface using Raw Bin Macro filtered LiDAR points. The points were classified by manual filtering and the surface was cleaned in places of building, vegetation, bridges etc.

Services Rendered and Methodology

  • Client’s requirements from this project were
  • Identify  all  Hydro features
  • Segregate all the building, vegetation, bridge area into different layers.
  • Generate  cleaned BIN data

Total Area of the Project: 45 Sq Kms.

Inputs

  • Raw Bin Macro filtered LiDAR points 7KM / 7KM
  • Orthophoto’s for reference.

LiDAR data processing (clean up) methodology

  • Pre- processing:
  • Input files are checked for data quality
  • Manual filtering of points using TerraScan
  • Surface cleaning using TerraModeler
  • Digitization:
  • Digitizing boundaries for hydro features of water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds etc.
  • Cleaning DEM points in the place of buildings, vegetation, bridges and placing them in Non-ground layer.
  • Elevations:  Assign Heights to hydro features with the help of LiDAR points.
  • Edgematch: Edgematch with adjacent tiles/quadrant.
  • Quality Check

 Deliverables:

  • Bare Earth Layer
  • Non Ground Layer
  • Vegetation Layer
  • LiDAR return intensity Layer

 Output Files:

  • Bin Data
  • Microstation dgn file.

Tools Used

  • TerraScan
  • TerraModeler
  • Microstation V 8
