Geo-Spatial Data, Mapping & Information Services for Utilities

Location Data for Utility Design, Modeling and Analysis

  Explore

Magnasoft brings extensive experience to the Utilities vertical, helping electric utilities with the data and insights for designing, drafting, and planning of electricity supply lines within a township or from a power station. We are among the top few firms in India that have mapped 275,000 LKM of transmission and distribution lines for the world’s top 20 utility companies. Providing the right spatial data and information services for utilities is key to their success: this is why our geospatial mapping services for utilities can be tailored to satisfy the business needs and disruptions through accurate processing of data, improving infrastructure, using cutting-edge service solutions and 100% versatile, highly skilled and cross-trained staff.

Magnasoft develops models of overhead lines, structures, terrain and vegetation features by utilizing the latest LiDAR data acquisition technologies. Magnasoft’s 3D transmission line mapping offers rich insights to power utilities on wire stringing, vegetation encroachment and sag profiling. We help to develop highly accurate, 3D surveys of terrain, vegetation and electric utility infrastructure.

In addition to our transmission line mapping services, we use ortho and LiDAR data for 3D corridor mapping and catenary stringing mapping:

3D Corridor Mapping

All planimetric features are extracted from ortho and LiDAR data across the path of the corridor. Based on this information, Magnasoft assigns the 3D elevations to every feature. Magnasoft highly accurate 3D feature models extracted from point cloud data enable power utility providers to calculate line ratings, element sag and tension. The 3D models depict the actual “as-built” surveys that map the relationship between all natural and manmade features. Also, the effect of weather conditions on powerline state and performance is calculated to provide an accurate “on-ground” representation.

Catenary Stringing

Magnasoft supports power utilities to visualize the point of attachment and point of interaction between the wire and the tower. We utilize the most updated software to string all the power line wires, to match the existing conditions. We also identify conductor and insulator attachment points.

Power utility companies leverage our services to precisely analyze information of Powerline and ground features. Substations are critical utility assets that are part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system. Understanding the condition of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) network assets is a big challenge today, to prevent safety hazards. Magnasoft’s Remote visual T&D asset inspection and health monitoring services use detailed and precise network measurements in 3D to help utilities monitor and maintain their network assets.

Utilities require precise and up-to-date 3D utility network data for engineering analysis and network design. Our 3D line modelling services include: Creation of Method-1 structures to match LiDAR, Creation of Method-4 structures based on LiDAR, utility material database and

standards, field photos of structures and as-built drawings (for engineered steel poles) and thermal calculations to calculate as-surveyed temperature of conductor and graphically sag

conductors to match existing conditions. We provide thermal rating reports which include maximum temperature for which vertical required clearance under a wire just becomes insufficient. Based on this report, utilities can identify clearance violations with nearby buildings, roads, etcetera in the existing conditions. Finally, we provide structural analysis by modeling poles and pylons using Method-4 structures.

Magnasoft’s powerline vegetation encroachment monitoring data service provides utilities with detailed vegetation management reports that elaborate on the encroachments due to dangerous growth of the trees along the corridor. Details include span-wise violations, location details of encroachment, graphic representations of encroachment and standards considered for analysis.

Vegetation encroachment can cause service interruptions. Magnasoft’s web-based power line vegetation encroachment monitoring data service offers power utility service providers a cost-effective, efficient and accurate method to monitor transmission lines and surrounding vegetation. Using the classified point cloud data and catenary wires, we run our customized tool to find the location where the vegetation is approaching the wires, within the client’s defined permissible range. Magnasoft provides power utility service providers with danger location details with the classified data. With the use of our models, energy providers can create mitigation plans to deal with immediate issues and proactively plan for long-term management of vegetation along corridors, to avoid future power interruptions and outages.

Magnasoft provides a 3D visualization platform showing utility asset structure information, such as poles, towers, conductors, insulators and more. Our utility mapping services including ortho and LiDAR data capture, processing and visualization, which is a prerequisite for regular and periodic updation of the powerline network database to ensure accuracy of information, necessary for utility asset management. Additionally, LiDAR data helps utility managers understand the structure & conductor locations and conditions. By providing up-to-date and accurate geospatial content and data for utilities, utility asset management is improved greatly.

Estimating solar power potential to determine how much electricity can be generated from a building, block or neighborhood is a powerful tool for utility companies. Using our geospatial content and data for utilities including orthophotos and LiDAR data from an area of interest, we map solar energy, identify suitable rooftops and calculate the total amount of solar radiation per building based on suitable rooftops. This analysis is essential for deciding where to install solar panels and generate a maximum ROI.

Magnasoft conducts engineering analysis on power lines by creating 3D models leveraging PLS-CADD software. We run analyses and simulations on power networks for different weather conditions. Using the classified LiDAR data, we build a 3D model to replicate existing conditions. We simulate extreme weather conditions and analyze the behavior of the various powerline components. With rich experience in power transmission and distribution lines, we generate customized reports as per the requirement of the power utility service provider. The 3D model generated can be used to understand the reliability and resilience of the powerline network. In addition to this, we conduct a feasibility study for upgrading the existing network.

Natural Gas is one of the most important public utilities whose business operations are intrinsically spatial. At Magnasoft, we have years of expertise in executing notable gas utility projects across various geographies. We use a host of mapping techniques which support in creating tailor-made pipeline management platforms for our clients. Right from data updates in the existing database to providing 3D and 4D models for visualization of buildings and pipelines to sharing the real-time location of the pipelines. The location maps help pipeline inspectors to digitally locate the utilities without having to personally inspect them. Also, the customer location near to these pipelines can be easily identified thereby ensuring tighter security and safety of the households.

An important component of our geospatial mapping services for our utilities is thematic map development. Apart from precise 3D visualization, planning and analysis of utility assets, we create thematic maps of larger areas to visualize the progress of different utility projects. For example, showing which lines have been processed or are in-processing. Such overview maps show utilities quickly how multiple projects are progressing over time and what their current status is. Additionally, we provide GIS solutions for Oil and Gas companies so that the progress of specific oil and gas projects can be mapped and analyzed.
