Realizing this utmost need of strengthening a nation’s infrastructure, US President, Joe Biden recently introduced a $2 trillion ‘Rebuilding Infrastructure’ plan. The spending in the proposed plan focuses on diverse physical infrastructure projects, including transportation, broadband, the electric grid and housing. It also mentions making more efforts towards advancing manufacturing and other key industries in order to build a stronger economy.

Major Focus Areas for Growth

President Biden’s infrastructure plan is likely to get translated into several important projects including rebuilding of 20,000 miles of roads, repair of 10,000 smaller bridges along with the 10 most vital bridges of the country, eliminating lead pipes from water supplies etc. The plan includes $50 billion of dedicated investments for improving the infrastructure resilience of the country.

Basis the plan, roads, bridges and airports are to be made more resilient to withstand the effects of storms, floods, fires etc. Funds are to be invested in research and development of clean technologies and retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient. The plan proposes spending of $46 billion for buying electric vehicles and $35 billion in research and development of new technologies.

Paying a lot of attention to climate change, President Biden, additionally focuses on modernizing and transforming electric power plants with an investment of $100 billion. By updating the electric grid, he aims to make the power utility more reliable and less susceptible to blackouts. Building more transmission lines from wind and solar plants to large cities is another area of focus.
